By your own opening statement, this is reckoned by the calendar. I assume you refer to the widely accepted Gregorian calendar and not the Julian or something even more obscure.
If you actually took the time to have a look at the calendar for 1980, you will see that the date you correctly calculated (Feb 28) is actually a Thursday, as per my answer back in March.
The fact that 1980 is a leap year is indeed relevant because the extra day (Feb 29) changes which date is 4 days before March 3.
