A man was found murdered on Sunday morning. His wife
immediately called the police. The police questioned the
wife and staff and got their alibis:
The Wife said she was sleeping.
The Cook was cooking breakfast.
The Gardener was picking vegetables.
The Maid was getting the mail.
The Butler was cleaning the closet.
The police instantly arrested the murdered.
Who did it and how did they know?
The maid- no mail is delivered on Sunday

ReplyDeleteMaid and the Butler - Mail isn't delivered on a Sunday and Butler's don't clean closets.
ReplyDeleteThe Butler did it. Butlers do not perform household chores.
ReplyDeleteTwo of my students said it was a suicide.
ReplyDeleteThree of my students think it was the butler.
Three of my students think it was the cook . . . why cook on a Sunday morning while everyone is sleeping?
I would guess it was the maid since mail isn't delivered on Sundays? But that could just be in Canada. Hmm.
ReplyDeleteThere's a little typo that you might want to correct:
ReplyDelete"The police instantly arrested the murdered." Well, the murdered is the dead man. You mean the murderer, yes?
Both the maid and the butler, because they claimed to have been performing duties that should have been reversed.
ReplyDeleteIf the crime was committed in a non-Christian country, then mail could certainly be delivered on a Sunday. The puzzle doesn't tell us that, though...)

ReplyDeleteThis puzzle is written poorly. The sleeping wife could immediately call the police for a a number of reasons (awakened by gunshot, husband was if bed with her while murderer killed him, waking her up in the process) it just doesn't say.
ReplyDeleteThe madi could have been getting the Sunday paper, which comes in the mailbox.
The only real solution is that the butler did it. The butler always does it.
lol i agree with breanne :) the maid did it. NO MAIL ON SUNDAYS!!
ReplyDeleteIt will be highly appreciable to recieve the right answer after a given period for responses. This will help in knowing what the correct answer is instead of going around thinking that what we think is and must be correct. Please do consider.

it was planned.....
and how did the wife knew that her husband was murdered..someone wakes her..??
Maid-Because there is no mail on Sundays
ReplyDeleteThe maid. There isn't mail on Sundays. The cook was cooking because well people wake up, right? The way it's stated sounds as if the wife was sleeping, woke up found her husband then called the police.

ReplyDelete"Sir, not only have you just been murdered, you are now under arrest. If you'd just come with us to the station..."

ReplyDeleteAs Vernon Dursley puts it; There's no post on Sundays. The maid then.
ReplyDeleteAdmittedly, the riddle doesn't give enough information for a proper answer, but I've seen this riddle loads of times and the answer is always the maid.
