Water Level

If you are on a boat and toss a suitcase overboard,
will the water level rise or fall?

it neither rises nor falls for standard frame of reference and also for the person on the boat...

when the suitcase is thrown into the water..water displaces volume equal to the mass of the siutcase..also the boat rises a little to adjust the bouyancy effect...

The water level both rises and falls as the waves generated from the suitcase hitting the water pass the observer. ;-)

If the suitcase is floating then the water level remains the same. If the suitcase sinks into the water then level of water raises.

huh? i thought if the suitcase sinks into the water, the level of water falls.

the water level falls after the suitcase is thrown because it leaves the confines of the ship. When the suitcase enters the water, the water level will rise, no matter if it floats (some of the case will be below the water) or if it sinks (all of the case displaces water).

BETTER QUESTION

Why would you toss your suitcase overboard?
