on the other side of the river.

Suppose length is X.
X- (X/7) - (X/8) = 4100
X= 5600
Agree, it is 5600. My only comment is that it's not metres, but inches. Minor detail.
My way of thinking:
Bridge's length:
1/7 of length
1/8 of length
4100 inches of length
x = 1/7x + 1/8x + 4100 /*7
7x = x + 7/8x + 4100*7 /*8
56x = 8x + 7x + 4100*56
56x - (8x + 7x) = 4100 * 56
41x = 4100 * 56
x = 100 * 56 = 5600
