Sherlock Holmes Riddles

Sherlock breaks into a crime scene. The victim is the owner who is
slumped dead on a chair and have a bullet hole in his head. A gun lies on the floor and a cassette recorder is found on the table.
On pressing the play button, Sherlock hears the message
'I have committed sins in my life and now I offer my soul to the
great lord'....following a gunshot.
Sherlock smiles Of-course its a murder.

Why did he think so?

If the gun fired while taping, who put it on the table?

And on play, it started from the beginning. So someone rewinded it for the dead guy.

How could a dead man stop and rewind the record player? Of course someone else must have done it after killing the the victim.

The killer rewinded the tape !!

I was thinking along the lines that he "offer[ed] my[his] soul to the great lord'". If he were religious and believed in a lord, he would know that suicide is a sin and would send him to Hell.

This is assuming his "great lord" is God, and that he's christian.

Because a dead man can't stop the recorder.

The dead man could not have been a religious man of any of the two Judeo-christian religions, since suicide is not allowed in either the Torah or the Bible.

Second he could not have placed the gun on the table after killing himself.

The tape could have been automatically rewound after the tape hit the end of the cassette, I had a recorder that did that automatically, but if it is a regular tape recorder, he would not have been able to rewind the tape if he was dead.

There were no such things as a cassette recorders in the late 1800's so this puzzle makes no sense. Or he was murdered inside a time machine and and then sent back in time. Way too many logistics for that.

'FOLLOWING' a gunshot? That indicates the message was AFTER the gunshot. Thus the gunshot was first and then he says the message with a bullet in his head. I'm no Serpico here but I'm pretty sure that didn't happen. Bad grammar I guess.

Simple. Sherlock Holmes was the murderer.

It's a revenge. The man said he had committed great sins, therefore as his final sentence and as a passing message in reference to his death, it was someone looking for revenge. It couldn't have been a suicide, otherwise the gun would have fallen on his lap.

The answer is who stop the cassette recorder.

If sherlock had to press play, it means that somebody had stopped the recording. The gun shot is heard in the message, thus a dead man couldn't have stopped the recorder. Obviously not a suicide

There is still not enough evidence presented to stated whether it was a suicide or a murder. If indeed it was murder yes the person would have setup the the tape accordingly but on the other hand it may have been an assisted suicide. Again not enough evidence to state who this 'lord' is or what he means by sins. Now if we go on the premise that Sherlock knew the owner then it changes the whole game.
